Winter 2023 Workshop

Supporting African American & Latinx Students: the Challenges, Disparate Educational Experiences, and Yes, Their Successes!
Presented by Xavier Leonard

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding and accepting the challenges that African American and Latinx boys face in the school setting.  
  • Discussion of how these challenges are experientially viewed and what happens next (behavioral and/or emotional issues).  
  • What do we as school psychologists identify, address, and work through these dynamics? 
  • Understanding the powerful role that school psychologists can have as change agents to positively shift the psychological and actual trajectory of these youth.  
  • How do we accept, understand and commit to this role as transformational counselors and leaders, particularly where administrators do not embrace this philosophy?

Fall 2022 Workshop 

Understanding and Supporting Gender Diverse Students 
Presented by Todd A. Savage, PhD., NCSP, University of Wisconsin-River Falls

Topics to be covered: 

  • Increase participant awareness around gender diversity, specifically as it relates to schools
  • Assist the participant in enhancing and/or constructing a knowledge base in this regard
  • Help the participant understand various data related to gender diverse students, particularly around suicide
  • Provide strategies participants could employ in their every day work to support gender diverse students
  • The presentation includes background information and definitions; school specific data, legal/ethical considerations, family matters, and basic practical strategies
  • Evidence-based interventions and practices to support this population
